About Our Water Heater Installation in Round Rock

Round Rock has grown fast, and the homes here reflect that — some built in the 1980s when this was a quiet suburb, others brand new in master-planned communities still under development. That wide range of home ages means water heater needs vary a lot from street to street. Older homes may have undersized units that were fine for smaller families but can't keep up today, while newer construction sometimes comes with builder-grade equipment that looks good on paper but underdelivers within a few years. Cold is on the Right installs the right-sized, right-spec unit for whatever your home actually needs.

We also understand that Round Rock residents do their homework. You've probably already compared tank vs. tankless, read about energy efficiency ratings, and looked up what your neighbors paid. Good — we welcome informed customers. Our team will walk you through every option, explain the trade-offs honestly, and give you a clear price before any work begins. No pressure, no upsells you don't need, just a solid installation done right the first time.

Water Heater Installation Services We Provide in Round Rock

Traditional Tank Water Heater Installation

Tank water heaters remain the most common choice in Round Rock homes, and for good reason — they're reliable, cost-effective upfront, and easy to service. We install 40- and 50-gallon gas and electric units sized to match your household's actual hot water demand. Whether you're replacing an aging unit or starting fresh in a new build, we'll get it done correctly and up to code.

Tankless Water Heater Installation

Tankless systems are a popular upgrade for Round Rock families who are tired of running out of hot water during busy mornings or paying to heat water they're not using. We install whole-home and point-of-use tankless units and handle all necessary gas line or electrical upgrades to support them. The result is on-demand hot water and lower monthly energy costs over time.

Water Heater Replacement

If your current water heater is more than 10 years old, showing signs of rust, or struggling to keep up with demand, replacement is usually the smarter financial move over another repair. We assess your existing setup, help you choose a better-matched replacement unit, and handle full removal and installation in most cases the same day. Round Rock homes that have gone through multiple repair cycles often see immediate improvement after a proper replacement.

Water Heater Repair

Not every water heater problem requires a full replacement — sometimes it's a faulty heating element, a worn-out thermostat, or a failing pressure relief valve. Our technicians diagnose the issue accurately so you're not paying for parts or labor you don't need. If repair is the right call, we'll fix it; if replacement makes more financial sense, we'll tell you that honestly too.

Gas Water Heater Installation

Many Round Rock homes are plumbed for natural gas, making gas water heaters an efficient and cost-effective choice for most households. We install gas tank and tankless units and verify all connections, venting, and pressure settings meet current safety standards. Proper gas line sizing is critical for performance, especially with high-demand households — we get that right from the start.

Electric Water Heater Installation

Electric water heaters work well in homes without gas service and in areas of Round Rock where all-electric construction is more common. We handle the full installation including breaker panel verification to confirm your electrical system can support the new unit's amperage draw. For homeowners considering solar or battery backup systems, an electric water heater can integrate cleanly into a whole-home energy plan.

Hybrid Heat Pump Water Heater Installation

Hybrid heat pump water heaters are one of the most energy-efficient options available and qualify for federal tax credits that can significantly offset the upfront cost. They work especially well in Round Rock's climate, pulling ambient heat from the air to warm water rather than generating heat directly. We size and install these units properly so they perform as advertised — placement and airflow matter, and we know what to look for.

Water Heater Code Compliance and Permitting

Water heater installations in Williamson County require permits, and improper installations that skip this step can create insurance and resale headaches down the road. Cold is on the Right pulls the necessary permits and ensures every installation meets current plumbing and mechanical codes. This is especially important in older Round Rock homes where previous work may not have been up to standard.

Expansion Tank Installation

Many Round Rock homes on closed plumbing systems are required by code to have an expansion tank installed alongside a new water heater. Without one, pressure fluctuations can shorten the life of your new unit significantly. We assess your system during installation and add an expansion tank when needed — it's a small addition that protects a major investment.

Water Heater Drain Pan and Overflow Line Installation

A properly installed drain pan and overflow line are critical in Round Rock homes where water heaters are located in upstairs closets, finished utility rooms, or attic spaces. A small leak from an aging unit can cause significant water damage before anyone notices — a drain pan catches it and routes it safely away. We include this in our standard installation process so you're protected from day one.

Water Softener Integration with New Water Heater

Hard water is a real issue in the Round Rock area, and it significantly shortens the lifespan of water heaters by causing mineral buildup inside the tank and on heating elements. If you're installing a new water heater and don't already have a softener, we can discuss options that protect your investment. We also install anode rods rated for harder water conditions to extend the life of your new unit in homes without a softener.

We Know Round Rock Homes

Round Rock covers a lot of ground — literally and figuratively. The older neighborhoods near downtown were built decades before the city became one of the fastest-growing suburbs in the country, and those homes often have original plumbing that's never been touched since installation. Water heaters in these houses were frequently undersized even when new, and the hard water that runs through Williamson County has had years to coat the inside of those tanks with scale. We've been in enough of these homes to know exactly what to expect and how to address it properly.

On the newer end of Round Rock's housing stock, the challenges are different but just as real. Builder-grade water heaters in newer subdivisions near Teravista or Forest Creek move units fast but aren't always matched to the home's actual footprint or the family that moves in. We've replaced plenty of builder-installed units that were technically functional but simply wrong for the household from day one. Knowing the difference between what a home has and what it actually needs is what separates a real local plumber from someone just running through calls.

We contacted Cold is on the Right today with an urgent plumbing need. Their very professional and organized crew arrived within 30 minutes and fixed our issue. We called five other plumbing companies before them and no one was able to help us. Cold is on the Right will now be the first plumbers we call.

We called due to slow drainage and apparently main line backing up into master bathroom shower and sink. There is an automated line that takes your information and apparently works very well. Plumbers Billy and Jeremy showed up promptly after we were informed they were being dispatched this morning, they stayed and worked until the problem was solved and advised on possible future repairs that would need to be done. They were professional, smart, respectful of our home, and efficient in their actions. Let us know what things would cost and were honest in their assessment of what would be needed next and how (un) likely our homeowners insurance would be able to help.  I appreciate the service and the fair treatment by these gentlemen. Thank you.

Santiago and Kyle were amazing during our total HVAC system replacement. Kind, informative, knowledgeable and careful to ensure a smooth install. They were efficient and got my AC working before my family arrived for spring break. Now enjoying the cool air with family. Great pricing and quick turn around from quote to finished job. Thank you! 10/10 would recommend them to anyone needing HVCA or plumbing work.

These guys are prompt and very polite, and explain your options well without trying to upsell. We thought we needed three things replaced, but they showed us that one of the three just needed an adjustment rather than a replacement. Wonderful service!

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does water heater installation cost in Round Rock, TX?
Water heater installation in Round Rock typically runs between $900 and $1,800 for a standard tank replacement, depending on the size of the unit, whether it's gas or electric, and any code upgrades needed like expansion tanks or updated venting. Tankless water heater installations generally cost more upfront, often between $1,500 and $3,500, but the long-term energy savings can offset that difference over time. The best way to get an accurate number is to have a tech assess your current setup, since homes vary quite a bit in Round Rock depending on age and configuration. We provide upfront quotes before any work begins so there are no surprises.
How long does a water heater installation take in Round Rock?
Most standard tank water heater replacements in Round Rock take two to three hours from arrival to completion. Tankless installations typically take longer, often three to five hours, because they sometimes require gas line upgrades, new venting runs, or electrical work depending on the unit type. Homes with older plumbing or non-standard configurations can add time, which is why we assess the job before quoting. In most cases we can complete the work the same day you call, especially for straightforward replacements.
Tank or tankless water heater — which is better for a Round Rock home?
Both have real advantages depending on your household size, budget, and long-term plans. Tank water heaters cost less upfront and are easier to replace, which is a practical choice if you're not planning to stay in the home long-term or want to keep initial costs low. Tankless units are more energy-efficient, deliver endless hot water on demand, and tend to last longer, often 20 years or more versus 10 to 12 for a tank. In Round Rock's hard water environment, tankless units do require periodic descaling maintenance to perform properly. We'll walk you through both options based on your home's actual plumbing and your family's usage patterns.
Does hard water in Round Rock affect my water heater?
Yes, significantly. Round Rock sits in an area with notably hard water, and the mineral content causes calcium and magnesium deposits to accumulate inside tank water heaters over time. This sediment layer insulates the water from the heating element, forces the unit to work harder, raises your energy costs, and shortens the overall lifespan of the tank. You'll often hear a popping or rumbling sound from a heavily scaled tank. Installing an anode rod rated for hard water conditions and using a water softener can extend your new water heater's life considerably. Annual flushing is also recommended to slow sediment accumulation.
Do I need a permit to replace a water heater in Round Rock?
Yes, water heater replacements in Round Rock require a permit from the City of Round Rock's building department. This applies to both tank and tankless installations. Skipping the permit is a risk — unpermitted work can create problems when you sell your home, and some homeowners insurance policies can complicate claims if work wasn't done to code. We handle the permit process as part of our installation, so you don't have to navigate it yourself. Every installation we complete is done to current Williamson County and City of Round Rock code requirements.
How do I know if my water heater needs to be replaced or just repaired?
Age is the most reliable starting point — if your water heater is 10 years or older, replacement usually makes more financial sense than continued repairs. Rust-colored hot water, visible corrosion on the tank, or water pooling around the base are strong indicators that the tank itself is compromised and can't be repaired effectively. Functional issues like a faulty thermostat, a failed heating element, or a tripped pilot light are often worth repairing on a newer unit. If you're paying for the second or third repair in two years on a unit that's pushing a decade old, that money is usually better applied toward a new installation. We'll give you an honest assessment either way.
