About Our Water Heater Installation in Lakeway

Lakeway is one of Austin's most established communities, and a lot of its homes carry decades of history — including water heaters that have been quietly working overtime since the Clinton administration. Humidity off Lake Travis accelerates wear on water heater components, and mineral-heavy local water speeds up sediment buildup inside tanks. When it's finally time to replace that old unit, you want someone who understands what these homes have been through and can match the right system to your specific setup.

Cold is on the Right has been serving the Lake Travis area long enough to know the quirks — cramped utility closets in older ranch-style homes, undersized original water heater installations in 90s builds, and the growing demand for tankless systems in newer lakeside properties. We'll assess your home's hot water demands, walk you through your options honestly, and install the system that makes sense for how you actually live.

Water Heater Services We Provide in Lakeway

New Tank Water Heater Installation

We install gas and electric storage tank water heaters sized correctly for your home's demand. For older Lakeway homes replacing an original unit, we assess the existing connections, venting, and space constraints before recommending a model so nothing is left to guesswork.

Learn More

Tankless Water Heater Installation

Tankless systems are a popular upgrade for Lakeway homeowners who want endless hot water and lower energy bills. We handle the gas line upgrades or electrical work required and ensure your new unit is properly sized for Lake Travis humidity and your household's peak demand.

Learn More

Water Heater Replacement

When your current water heater has given all it can, we make the replacement process straightforward. We remove the old unit, check your existing connections for code compliance, and install the new system with minimal disruption to your day.

Learn More

Water Heater Repair

Not every water heater problem calls for a full replacement. If your unit is within its service life and experiencing issues like a failing element, a faulty thermostat, or a leaking pressure relief valve, our technicians can often repair it the same day.

Learn More

Gas Water Heater Installation

Gas water heaters heat water faster and typically cost less to operate than electric models — a real advantage in larger Lakeway homes with high hot water demand. We install and connect gas units safely, verifying proper venting to prevent carbon monoxide issues common in tightly sealed newer construction.

Learn More

Electric Water Heater Installation

Electric water heaters are a practical choice for Lakeway homes without a gas line or for supplemental installations in guest quarters. We ensure your panel can handle the load and that the unit is wired and installed to current code before we leave your home.

Learn More

Water Heater Sediment Flush Before Installation

Heavy mineral content in the Lakeway water supply means sediment accumulates fast — sometimes cutting a water heater's life short by years. Before any new installation, we flush and clean the system and advise on whether a water softener or filtration upgrade would protect your investment long-term.

Learn More

Expansion Tank Installation

Homes on closed plumbing systems — increasingly common in Lakeway subdivisions — require a thermal expansion tank alongside the water heater to protect the unit and your pipes from pressure buildup. We include this check as part of every installation to keep your system compliant and safe.

Learn More

Water Heater Code Compliance Upgrades

Older Lakeway homes sometimes have water heaters installed under outdated codes — missing seismic straps, improper venting, or undersized relief valve discharge lines. When we install a new unit, we bring everything up to current standards so your home is protected and your permit closes without issues.

Learn More

Point-of-Use Water Heater Installation

Large lakefront and hillside homes in Lakeway often have guest rooms, outdoor kitchens, or pool houses that sit far from the main water heater. A point-of-use unit installed at the source eliminates long waits for hot water and reduces water waste on properties where every run counts.

Learn More

Water Heater Permit and Inspection Services

Water heater installations in Lakeway require a city permit and inspection. We handle the permit process on your behalf, schedule the inspection, and make sure the installation passes the first time so there are no headaches down the road for you or a future buyer of your home.

We Know Lakeway Homes

Lakeway's housing stock tells the story of a community that grew up around the lake over several decades. The older ranch-style and split-level homes built in the 70s through 90s often have original galvanized or copper plumbing that's been patched and extended over the years, and water heaters tucked into tight spaces that weren't designed with easy access in mind. That history means a new installation isn't just a swap — it's a chance to bring the whole setup up to where it should be, and we know exactly what to look for when we get in there.

The lake proximity is real factor too. The humidity in Lakeway accelerates corrosion on water heater components and connections, and the mineral-heavy water supply here builds sediment faster than in drier parts of the Austin area. We factor all of that into every recommendation we make, whether we're talking to someone in an older Lakeside Drive home or a newer build up in the hills. This community values people who know what they're doing and stick around — and that's exactly how we operate.

Graysen and Andrew from Cold is on the Right came out just a couple hours after I called and took care of cutting out my kitchen faucet. We contacted Cold is on the Right today with an urgent plumbing need. Their very professional and organized crew arrived within 30 minutes and fixed our issue. We called five other plumbing companies before them and no one was able to help us. Cold is on the Right will now be the first plumbers we call.

We called due to slow drainage and apparently main line backing up into master bathroom shower and sink. There is an automated line that takes your information and apparently works very well. Plumbers Billy and Jeremy showed up promptly after we were informed they were being dispatched this morning, they stayed and worked until the problem was solved and advised on possible future repairs that would need to be done. They were professional, smart, respectful of our home, and efficient in their actions. Let us know what things would cost and were honest in their assessment of what would be needed next and how (un) likely our homeowners insurance would be able to help.  I appreciate the service and the fair treatment by these gentlemen. Thank you.

Santiago and Kyle were amazing during our total HVAC system replacement. Kind, informative, knowledgeable and careful to ensure a smooth install. They were efficient and got my AC working before my family arrived for spring break. Now enjoying the cool air with family. Great pricing and quick turn around from quote to finished job. Thank you! 10/10 would recommend them to anyone needing HVCA or plumbing work.

These guys are prompt and very polite, and explain your options well without trying to upsell. We thought we needed three things replaced, but they showed us that one of the three just needed an adjustment rather than a replacement. Wonderful service!

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does water heater installation cost in Lakeway?
The cost of water heater installation in Lakeway typically ranges from $900 to $1,800 for a standard tank unit, depending on size, fuel type, and what the existing setup requires. Tankless installations run higher — usually $1,800 to $3,500 or more — because they often involve gas line upgrades or electrical panel work. Older Lakeway homes sometimes require additional work to bring venting or connections up to current code, which can add to the total. We always provide upfront pricing before any work begins so you know exactly what you're committing to.
How long does a water heater installation take in Lakeway?
Most standard tank water heater replacements in Lakeway take 2 to 4 hours from start to finish. Tankless installations typically take 4 to 6 hours, especially when gas line modifications or electrical upgrades are involved. Older homes in Lakeway occasionally have access challenges or outdated connections that add some time, but we'll flag anything unexpected before we start the work rather than surprising you at the end.
Does Lakeway require a permit for water heater installation?
Yes, the City of Lakeway requires a permit for water heater replacements and new installations. The permit triggers an inspection by a city official to verify the unit is installed safely and to code. Cold is on the Right handles the permit application on your behalf and schedules the inspection as part of the job — you don't have to navigate that process yourself. Having a permitted installation on record also protects you if you ever sell the home.
Does the lake humidity in Lakeway affect how long a water heater lasts?
It can. The elevated humidity near Lake Travis accelerates surface corrosion on water heater fittings, connections, and the unit's exterior — particularly on older metal components. Combined with the mineral-heavy local water supply, which drives sediment buildup inside the tank, Lakeway water heaters sometimes age faster than their rated lifespan suggests they should. Annual flushing to clear sediment and keeping the area around the unit well-ventilated can extend the life of your system meaningfully.
Should I upgrade to a tankless water heater when I replace my old unit?
Tankless water heaters are worth serious consideration for Lakeway homeowners, especially if you have a larger home or frequently run out of hot water with your current tank. They provide on-demand hot water, last 20 or more years with proper maintenance, and have lower operating costs over time. The tradeoff is a higher upfront cost and the potential need for gas line or electrical upgrades. For older Lakeway homes already facing other updates, the timing can actually work in your favor since the systems are being touched anyway.
What size water heater do I need for my Lakeway home?
Sizing depends on the number of people in your household and your peak hot water usage patterns. A two-person home typically does fine with a 40-gallon tank, while a family of four or more usually needs 50 to 75 gallons for comfortable daily use. Larger lakefront or hillside homes in Lakeway with multiple bathrooms and high-demand fixtures may be better served by a tankless system or a dual-unit setup. We assess your specific home and usage before recommending anything — correct sizing at installation makes a real difference in performance and efficiency.
