About Our Water Heater Replacement in Westlake

Westlake is one of Austin's most established and desirable communities, and the homes here reflect that — spacious layouts, mature landscaping, and decades of character built into every room. That age and quality also means plumbing systems that have seen a lot of use. Water heaters in these homes are often original to the construction or were last replaced a generation ago, and the mineral-rich water that runs through Central Texas accelerates wear on tanks and heating elements significantly. When we replace a water heater in Westlake, we don't treat it like a routine swap — we assess what the home actually needs.

Cold is on the Right Plumbing & Air brings real familiarity with the types of systems found in Westlake's older luxury homes, including large-capacity gas units, systems with recirculation pumps for sprawling floor plans, and setups tucked into utility spaces that require careful access. We size the new unit properly, handle all necessary permits, and make sure the installation meets current code requirements — which often differ from what was in place when these homes were originally built. Our goal is a replacement that performs reliably for years, not just a quick fix that creates more problems down the road.

Water Heater Replacement Services We Provide in Westlake

Traditional Tank Water Heater Replacement

For many Westlake homes with high hot water demand across multiple bathrooms, a properly sized tank water heater remains the right choice. We assess your household's usage patterns and replace your aging unit with a correctly sized, energy-efficient model. We also handle disposal of your old unit and ensure all connections meet current code.

Tankless Water Heater Replacement and Upgrade

Switching from a tank unit to a tankless system is a popular upgrade in Westlake's larger homes, eliminating standby heat loss and delivering on-demand hot water to multiple zones. We evaluate your gas line capacity or electrical infrastructure before recommending a system, so the upgrade actually performs as expected. Tankless systems also take up significantly less space, which matters in utility rooms that were designed decades ago.

Gas Water Heater Replacement

Gas water heaters are the most common type found in Westlake's established homes, and replacing them requires careful attention to gas line connections, venting, and proper sizing. We handle the entire replacement process including shutoff, disconnection, new unit installation, and testing to make sure everything is operating safely. If your existing venting is outdated, we'll address that as part of the replacement.

Electric Water Heater Replacement

Some Westlake homes, particularly those built with all-electric systems, rely on electric water heaters that can lose efficiency significantly as they age. We replace electric units and verify that your electrical panel and wiring are adequate for the new system's requirements. Upgrading to a modern electric heat pump water heater is also an option we can walk you through if energy efficiency is a priority.

High-Capacity Water Heater Replacement

Larger Westlake homes with multiple bathrooms and guest suites often require higher-capacity units or paired water heater configurations to meet demand without running cold. We have experience sizing and installing 75- to 100-gallon units as well as tandem setups for homes that standard replacements can't adequately serve. Getting the capacity right is just as important as the installation itself.

Recirculation System Integration

Many of Westlake's larger floor plans include hot water recirculation systems so that water reaches distant bathrooms quickly without wasting gallons down the drain. When replacing a water heater in these homes, we make sure the new unit is compatible with the existing recirculation pump and that the system is configured correctly. A water heater replacement done without accounting for the recirculation loop can result in significant inefficiency and lukewarm water at the tap.

Water Heater Installation for Remodels and Additions

Westlake homeowners frequently add guest quarters, pool houses, or expanded living spaces that require a dedicated or supplemental water heater. We handle new water heater installations as part of remodel and addition projects, coordinating with your contractor to get the right unit in the right location. Proper permitting and inspection are included so there are no surprises at final inspection.

Water Heater Repair Before Replacement

Not every failing water heater needs to be replaced immediately, and we'll always tell you honestly whether a repair makes financial sense for your situation. If your unit is relatively young and the issue is isolated to a thermostat, element, or valve, a targeted repair may be the smarter call. That said, if repair costs are approaching replacement costs or the unit is well past its service life, we'll give you a straight recommendation.

Permit-Compliant Replacement and Code Updates

Water heater replacements in Texas require a permit, and Westlake-area homes built in older decades often need updates to meet current code at the time of replacement. This can include expansion tanks, updated seismic strapping, pressure relief valve routing, and clearance compliance. We handle the permit process and make sure every installation passes inspection without last-minute surprises.

Hard Water Protection and Anode Rod Service

Central Texas water is notably hard, and the mineral buildup it causes is one of the leading reasons water heaters in this area fail prematurely. When we install a new water heater, we discuss options for protecting the new unit from scale buildup, including anode rod selection and whole-home water softening compatibility. Protecting a new unit from day one extends its service life considerably in this region.

Emergency Water Heater Replacement

A leaking or failed water heater can't always wait for a scheduled appointment, especially in a home where a failing unit risks water damage to finished spaces and premium materials. Cold is on the Right offers emergency water heater replacement service for Westlake homeowners who need fast, reliable action. We arrive prepared to assess, quote, and replace on the same visit whenever possible.

We Know Westlake Homes

Westlake's housing stock is unlike most of the Austin area — these are thoughtfully built luxury homes from the 1970s through the 1990s, many of them sprawling single-story or split-level layouts with multiple bathrooms, guest wings, and finished utility spaces. The plumbing in homes this age has character, and not always the good kind. Galvanized pipe, undersized gas lines for modern appliances, and water heaters tucked into tight spaces that weren't designed with future replacement in mind are all things we encounter regularly in this neighborhood.

Hill Country water chemistry plays a real role here too. The hard, mineral-heavy water that runs through Westlake accelerates sediment buildup inside tank water heaters, shortening their lifespan and degrading efficiency well before the calendar says it's time to replace. Homes near the Barton Creek corridor and the lakeside edges of the community also deal with humidity conditions that affect equipment longevity in utility areas. When you call Cold is on the Right, you're getting a team that has already worked through these exact conditions in homes just like yours — and knows what to look for before problems compound.

We contacted Cold is on the Right today with an urgent plumbing need. Their very professional and organized crew arrived within 30 minutes and fixed our issue. We called five other plumbing companies before them and no one was able to help us. Cold is on the Right will now be the first plumbers we call.

We called due to slow drainage and apparently main line backing up into master bathroom shower and sink. There is an automated line that takes your information and apparently works very well. Plumbers Billy and Jeremy showed up promptly after we were informed they were being dispatched this morning, they stayed and worked until the problem was solved and advised on possible future repairs that would need to be done. They were professional, smart, respectful of our home, and efficient in their actions. Let us know what things would cost and were honest in their assessment of what would be needed next and how (un) likely our homeowners insurance would be able to help.  I appreciate the service and the fair treatment by these gentlemen. Thank you.

Santiago and Kyle were amazing during our total HVAC system replacement. Kind, informative, knowledgeable and careful to ensure a smooth install. They were efficient and got my AC working before my family arrived for spring break. Now enjoying the cool air with family. Great pricing and quick turn around from quote to finished job. Thank you! 10/10 would recommend them to anyone needing HVCA or plumbing work.

These guys are prompt and very polite, and explain your options well without trying to upsell. We thought we needed three things replaced, but they showed us that one of the three just needed an adjustment rather than a replacement. Wonderful service!

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a water heater replacement take in a Westlake home?
Most standard water heater replacements take between two and four hours from arrival to completion. Older Westlake homes can add time if the existing connections require updates to meet current code, if access is difficult in a tight utility room, or if we discover corroded gas or water lines that need attention. We'll give you a realistic time estimate before we start and communicate clearly if anything unexpected comes up during the job.
What size water heater does a large Westlake home typically need?
Sizing depends on the number of bathrooms, the number of people in the household, and how simultaneous hot water usage plays out in your home. Many of Westlake's larger homes do well with 75-gallon or larger tank units, or with properly sized tankless systems that can handle multiple simultaneous draws. We always calculate your home's first-hour rating needs before recommending a unit size, because undersizing is one of the most common mistakes made in replacement work on larger homes.
What should I do if my water heater is leaking right now?
If you see water pooling around the base of the tank or actively dripping from connections or the tank itself, shut off the cold water supply valve to the unit first. If it's a gas water heater, turn the gas valve to the pilot setting rather than leaving it fully on. Then give us a call, because an actively leaking tank often means internal corrosion that won't be fixable with a repair. We offer emergency service for situations like this, and in a home with hardwood floors or finished utility spaces, acting quickly matters.
