About Our Heat Pump Repair in Round Rock

Round Rock has grown dramatically over the past few decades, and that growth shows up in the homes we service every day. A 1988 ranch-style house near Old Settlers Park has very different equipment than a 2019 build in Teravista, but both depend on a properly working heat pump to stay comfortable. We work on all makes, models, and system ages — and we know how to spot the warning signs that a repair can extend a unit's life versus when a replacement makes more financial sense.

Round Rock homeowners tend to do their homework before calling anyone, and we respect that. We show up with the knowledge to back up our recommendations and the pricing transparency to earn your trust. No bait-and-switch diagnostics, no pressure tactics — just a straight assessment and a clear path forward so you can make an informed decision about your home's comfort system.

Heat Pump Repair Services We Provide in Round Rock

Heat Pump Diagnostic and Inspection

Before any repair work begins, we perform a thorough diagnostic to pinpoint exactly what's failing. In Round Rock's mix of older and newer housing stock, the root cause isn't always obvious — a refrigerant issue can look like an electrical problem, and a dirty coil can mimic a compressor failure. Getting the diagnosis right the first time saves you money and avoids repeat service calls.

Refrigerant Leak Detection and Recharge

Low refrigerant is one of the most common reasons Round Rock heat pumps lose their ability to heat or cool effectively. We locate the source of the leak, repair it properly, and recharge the system to manufacturer specifications. Simply topping off the refrigerant without fixing the leak is a temporary fix that will cost you more in the long run.

Learn More

Capacitor and Contactor Replacement

Capacitors and contactors are small components that take a beating in Central Texas heat, and they fail more often than most homeowners realize. When a capacitor goes out, your heat pump's fan or compressor won't start reliably. These are straightforward repairs when caught early, and we carry common replacement parts so we can resolve them on the same visit in most cases.

Learn More

Compressor Repair and Evaluation

The compressor is the heart of your heat pump, and when it fails, the whole system stops working. We evaluate whether the compressor can be repaired, needs replacement, or whether the age of the unit makes a full system replacement the smarter investment. For Round Rock homeowners with systems from the late 1990s or early 2000s, this evaluation can save thousands in misguided repair spending.

Learn More

Reversing Valve Repair

The reversing valve is unique to heat pumps and is what allows the system to switch between heating and cooling mode. A stuck or failing reversing valve often means your system heats when it should cool, or runs in one mode regardless of thermostat settings. This is a repair that requires a technician who genuinely understands heat pump mechanics, not just general HVAC experience.

Learn More

Air Handler and Blower Motor Repair

The air handler distributes conditioned air throughout your home, and a failing blower motor means weak airflow even when the outdoor unit is running fine. In Round Rock homes with larger square footage, poor airflow is noticeable fast and uncomfortable in both summer and winter. We inspect the blower motor, capacitor, and belt drive components to restore proper airflow throughout your system.

Learn More

Thermostat and Controls Repair

Sometimes a heat pump problem isn't in the equipment at all — it's in the thermostat or control board sending it bad signals. Round Rock's tech-savvy homeowners often have smart thermostats installed, and compatibility or wiring issues can cause erratic system behavior. We diagnose the full control circuit, not just the outdoor unit, to make sure we're fixing the actual source of the problem.

Learn More

Coil Cleaning and Repair

Dirty or damaged coils reduce heat transfer efficiency significantly, which means your heat pump works harder and delivers less comfort. Round Rock's combination of cedar and oak pollen, plus construction dust in growing neighborhoods, can clog outdoor coils faster than you'd expect. We clean and inspect both the indoor evaporator and outdoor condenser coils as part of a thorough repair service.

Learn More

Defrost System Repair

During Round Rock's occasional cold snaps, a heat pump's defrost cycle keeps ice from building up on the outdoor coil. When the defrost board, sensor, or relay fails, ice accumulates and the system loses efficiency or shuts down entirely. We test the full defrost circuit and restore proper operation so your system handles whatever Central Texas winter throws at it.

Heat Pump Maintenance Tune-Up

Preventive maintenance is the most cost-effective thing a Round Rock homeowner can do for a heat pump — catching small issues before they become expensive failures. Our tune-up covers refrigerant levels, electrical connections, coil condition, thermostat calibration, and overall system performance. Many of the repairs we see could have been avoided with a scheduled maintenance visit.

Heat Pump System Replacement Evaluation

When repairs are frequent or costs are climbing on an aging unit, it's worth a straight conversation about whether replacement makes more sense. We give Round Rock homeowners an honest comparison of repair versus replacement costs, factoring in system age, efficiency ratings, and long-term comfort. If a new installation is the right move, we can walk you through that path too.

We Know Round Rock Homes

Round Rock is one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, which means we see everything from 1980s brick ranchers near the old downtown to sprawling new construction in Forest Creek and Teravista. Older homes in Round Rock often have original HVAC infrastructure that's been partially updated over the years, which creates mismatched components and performance problems that require a technician who can read the full picture. Homes built in the 2000s and 2010s are hitting the age range where original heat pumps are starting to show wear, especially given how hard Central Texas summers push these systems.

The soil and climate conditions here matter too. Round Rock sits at the northern edge of the Hill Country transition zone, where temperature swings are real and humidity management is a year-round consideration. Years of hard water cycling through equipment, combined with peak-load summers that run systems for months straight, accelerates wear on components like capacitors, coils, and compressors. When we come out to a Round Rock home, we're not guessing — we understand the conditions these systems operate in and what failure patterns to look for based on system age and the neighborhood the home is in.

High Fives from Austin Homeowners

Graysen and Andrew from Cold is on the Right came out just a couple hours after I called and took care of cutting out my kitchen faucet. We contacted Cold is on the Right today with an urgent plumbing need. Their very professional and organized crew arrived within 30 minutes and fixed our issue. We called five other plumbing companies before them and no one was able to help us. Cold is on the Right will now be the first plumbers we call.

We called due to slow drainage and apparently main line backing up into master bathroom shower and sink. There is an automated line that takes your information and apparently works very well. Plumbers Billy and Jeremy showed up promptly after we were informed they were being dispatched this morning, they stayed and worked until the problem was solved and advised on possible future repairs that would need to be done. They were professional, smart, respectful of our home, and efficient in their actions. Let us know what things would cost and were honest in their assessment of what would be needed next and how (un) likely our homeowners insurance would be able to help.  I appreciate the service and the fair treatment by these gentlemen. Thank you.

Santiago and Kyle were amazing during our total HVAC system replacement. Kind, informative, knowledgeable and careful to ensure a smooth install. They were efficient and got my AC working before my family arrived for spring break. Now enjoying the cool air with family. Great pricing and quick turn around from quote to finished job. Thank you! 10/10 would recommend them to anyone needing HVCA or plumbing work.

These guys are prompt and very polite, and explain your options well without trying to upsell. We thought we needed three things replaced, but they showed us that one of the three just needed an adjustment rather than a replacement. Wonderful service!

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does heat pump repair typically cost in Round Rock?
Heat pump repair costs in Round Rock vary widely depending on what's failed. A capacitor replacement might run $150 to $300, while a refrigerant leak repair with recharge can be $300 to $600 or more. Compressor issues are the most expensive repairs, often ranging from $800 to $1,500, and at that price point it's worth evaluating whether replacement makes more sense given your system's age. We provide upfront pricing after diagnosis so you know exactly what you're looking at before any work begins.
How long does a heat pump repair take?
Most heat pump repairs can be completed in a single visit, typically taking one to three hours depending on the complexity of the issue. Common repairs like capacitor replacement, contactor swap, or refrigerant recharge are straightforward and fast. More involved work like a reversing valve replacement or coil repair may take longer or require a follow-up visit if specialty parts need to be ordered. We'll give you a realistic time estimate once we've completed the diagnostic.
Why is my heat pump running but not heating or cooling my Round Rock home?
This is one of the most common calls we get, and there are several possible causes. Low refrigerant from a leak is a frequent culprit, as is a failing reversing valve that keeps the system stuck in one mode. A dirty or frozen coil can also prevent proper heat exchange even when the unit appears to be running normally. In some cases it's a thermostat or control board issue sending incorrect signals to the equipment. A proper diagnostic is the only way to pinpoint the real cause rather than guessing.
Is it worth repairing a heat pump that's more than 10 years old?
It depends on what's failing and how much the repair costs relative to the system's remaining useful life. A well-maintained heat pump can last 15 years or more, so a 10-year-old unit with a minor repair need is usually worth fixing. If the compressor has failed on a 12 to 14-year-old system, the math often points toward replacement, especially since newer units are significantly more energy efficient. We give Round Rock homeowners an honest cost-benefit comparison so you're not spending good money after bad.
Why does my heat pump freeze up in summer here in Round Rock?
Ice buildup in summer is almost always caused by restricted airflow, low refrigerant, or a combination of both. A clogged air filter, blocked return vents, or a dirty evaporator coil can reduce airflow enough to cause the coil to drop below freezing and ice over. Low refrigerant from a slow leak also drops coil temperatures abnormally. Round Rock's high summer humidity makes this worse because there's more moisture in the air to freeze on the coil. If your unit is icing up, turn it off and let it thaw before calling for service so the tech can run a proper diagnostic.
How often should I have my heat pump serviced in Round Rock?
We recommend a professional tune-up at least once a year, ideally in the spring before heavy cooling season begins. Given how long and hot Round Rock summers are, the system works extremely hard from May through September, and starting that stretch with a well-maintained unit makes a real difference in performance and reliability. Homeowners with older systems or those who've had previous repair issues would benefit from twice-yearly service visits. Consistent maintenance is also the best way to catch small problems before they turn into expensive failures mid-summer.
