About Our Mini Split Services in Lakeway

Lakeway homes near the lake face a level of ambient humidity that most central Texas communities don't deal with the same way. That moisture works against traditional HVAC systems and can make older homes feel clammy even when the thermostat says otherwise. Mini splits are a natural fit here — they dehumidify the air as they cool, which means you're not just chasing a temperature number, you're actually making the space more livable. Whether you have a 1970s ranch-style home on a cove or a newer build up on Lohmans Crossing, we'll size the system to your space and get it right the first time.

We've worked in Lakeway long enough to know that a lot of the older homes here weren't designed with today's cooling demands in mind. Sunrooms, garages converted to living space, guest quarters near the water — these are exactly the areas where a mini split shines because you can condition them independently without overhauling your existing system. Cold is on the Right brings honest recommendations and upfront pricing to every job, so you know exactly what you're getting before we ever start the work.

Mini Split Services We Provide in Lakeway

Mini Split Installation

We handle full mini split installations for Lakeway homes, from single-zone units for a lake-view sunroom to multi-zone systems covering an entire older home that never had proper ductwork. We assess your space, recommend the right capacity, and install everything to manufacturer specs and local code. Getting the installation right from day one is the single biggest factor in how long your system will last in a high-humidity environment like Lakeway.

Multi-Zone Mini Split Systems

Multi-zone mini splits let you run one outdoor unit while independently controlling the temperature in multiple rooms or areas. This is especially useful in Lakeway homes where you might have a main living area, a waterfront bonus room, and a detached guest space that all need different treatment. We design the layout and handle the full installation so every zone works efficiently together.

Mini Split Repair

If your mini split is blowing warm air, freezing up, making unusual noises, or just not keeping up with the heat and humidity, we can diagnose and fix the problem fast. Lakeway's proximity to Lake Travis means moisture exposure is higher than average, and that takes a toll on outdoor condenser units and refrigerant lines over time. We stock common parts and arrive ready to work so you're not waiting days for a follow-up visit.

Mini Split Maintenance

Annual maintenance keeps your mini split running efficiently and catches small problems before they turn into expensive repairs. We clean the air handlers, check refrigerant levels, inspect the condensate drain, and test all electrical connections. In a lakeside environment, dust, pollen, and humidity can clog filters and coils faster than inland properties — staying on top of maintenance makes a real difference in performance and lifespan.

Mini Split Replacement

When an older mini split unit has reached the end of its useful life, we help Lakeway homeowners choose a replacement that's properly sized and energy efficient. We handle the removal of the old equipment, full installation of the new system, and all the line set and electrical work. Replacing an undersized or aging unit often results in noticeably lower energy bills and better humidity control right away.

Heat Pump Mini Splits

Heat pump mini splits provide both cooling and heating in one unit, making them a smart choice for Lakeway's mild winters and brutal summers. Because they move heat rather than generate it, they're highly efficient and can keep an older home comfortable year-round without a separate heating system. We install heat pump mini splits from trusted brands and can walk you through the efficiency ratings so you understand what you're buying.

Ductless System Design and Consultation

Not every Lakeway home is set up the same way, and a proper ductless system design starts with understanding how your specific space heats and cools. We assess insulation quality, window placement, sun exposure, ceiling heights, and room usage before recommending anything. That extra step means you get a system that performs as expected rather than one that's constantly running to compensate for a poor design.

Air Handler Installation and Replacement

The indoor air handler is the part of your mini split that you interact with most, and when it fails or becomes outdated, replacing it promptly keeps the rest of the system running properly. We install wall-mounted, ceiling cassette, and floor-mount handlers depending on what works best for your space. Older Lakeway homes with low ceilings or specific wall configurations often benefit from a ceiling cassette or floor-mount option we can help you evaluate.

Refrigerant Recharge and Leak Repair

Low refrigerant is a common reason mini splits stop cooling effectively, and in most cases it points to a leak somewhere in the line set rather than simple depletion. We locate and repair the leak first, then recharge the system to the correct level so the problem doesn't just come back. Humidity and UV exposure near the lake can degrade line set insulation over time, making this a more common service call in lakeside communities.

Condensate Drain Cleaning and Repair

Mini splits produce condensate as they dehumidify, and in a high-humidity environment like Lakeway, that drain line can clog more frequently than homeowners expect. A blocked condensate drain can cause water to back up into the air handler, damage walls, and trigger the system's overflow shutoff. We clean, flush, and repair condensate drain lines so your system keeps running without water damage surprises.

Smart Thermostat and Controls Integration

Many modern mini split systems can be paired with smart controls that let you manage temperature zones from your phone, set schedules, and monitor energy usage. We help Lakeway homeowners integrate compatible controls with new or existing mini split systems so you get the convenience you're looking for. For vacation homes and lake houses that sit empty during parts of the year, remote access controls are especially practical.

We Know Lakeway Homes

Lakeway has a character that's hard to replicate — established neighborhoods tucked around coves, mature trees, and homes built across several different decades sitting right next to each other. A lot of the older properties from the 1970s and 80s were built as lake getaways and have since become full-time residences, which means their HVAC systems were never really designed for year-round occupancy at today's comfort expectations. That combination of age, original construction intent, and lake humidity creates a very specific set of challenges we see regularly out here.

Working on Lakeway homes has taught us to look past the obvious and check the things that typically give out first — degraded line set insulation from years of UV and moisture exposure, air handlers that have been fighting elevated humidity longer than they should, and undersized systems that were fine for a weekend cabin but struggle as a primary residence. Cold is on the Right knows this community and the homes in it, and that familiarity is part of what makes us effective when we show up to your door.

High Fives from Austin Homeowners

Graysen and Andrew from Cold is on the Right came out just a couple hours after I called and took care of cutting out my kitchen faucet. They were professional, friendly, and clearly knowledgeable, explaining everything in a straightforward way without any upselling or confusion. It was refreshing to get honest answers and excellent service so quickly. I’ll definitely be using them again for future plumbing needs.

We contacted Cold is on the Right today with an urgent plumbing need. Their very professional and organized crew arrived within 30 minutes and fixed our issue. We called five other plumbing companies before them and no one was able to help us. Cold is on the Right will now be the first plumbers we call.

We called due to slow drainage and apparently main line backing up into master bathroom shower and sink. There is an automated line that takes your information and apparently works very well. Plumbers Billy and Jeremy showed up promptly after we were informed they were being dispatched this morning, they stayed and worked until the problem was solved and advised on possible future repairs that would need to be done. They were professional, smart, respectful of our home, and efficient in their actions. Let us know what things would cost and were honest in their assessment of what would be needed next and how (un) likely our homeowners insurance would be able to help.  I appreciate the service and the fair treatment by these gentlemen. Thank you.

Santiago and Kyle were amazing during our total HVAC system replacement. Kind, informative, knowledgeable and careful to ensure a smooth install. They were efficient and got my AC working before my family arrived for spring break. Now enjoying the cool air with family. Great pricing and quick turn around from quote to finished job. Thank you! 10/10 would recommend them to anyone needing HVCA or plumbing work.

These guys are prompt and very polite, and explain your options well without trying to upsell. We thought we needed three things replaced, but they showed us that one of the three just needed an adjustment rather than a replacement. Wonderful service!

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to install a mini split system in Lakeway?
A single-zone mini split installation in the Lakeway area typically runs between $2,000 and $4,500 depending on the brand, capacity, and complexity of the install. Multi-zone systems with two to four indoor air handlers generally range from $5,000 to $10,000 or more. Factors like the distance between the indoor and outdoor units, the difficulty of running the line set, and any electrical panel upgrades needed can affect the final price. We always provide a complete written price before any work begins so there are no surprises.
Are mini splits a good fit for older Lakeway homes built in the 1970s and 80s?
They're actually one of the best fits for that era of Lakeway home. Many of those properties were built as lake cabins or seasonal retreats and have limited or no ductwork, making a traditional central system expensive or invasive to retrofit. Mini splits require only a small penetration through the wall for the refrigerant line set and can be installed in individual rooms without touching the rest of the house. They're also far better at managing humidity than older systems, which matters a lot in a lakeside environment where moisture is a constant factor.
How often should I have my mini split serviced in Lakeway?
Once a year is the standard recommendation, but Lakeway's humidity and proximity to the lake can accelerate the buildup of dust, mold, and debris in the air handler and on the outdoor unit. We typically recommend scheduling maintenance in the spring before the heavy cooling season starts. During a maintenance visit we clean the filters and coils, inspect the condensate drain for clogs, check refrigerant pressure, and test the electrical connections. Staying on this schedule meaningfully extends the life of the equipment and keeps your energy bills from creeping up.
Why does my mini split seem to struggle more in the summer near the lake?
High ambient humidity is the primary culprit. Mini splits are designed to dehumidify as they cool, but when outdoor humidity is consistently elevated — which is normal for homes on or near Lake Travis — the system works harder to pull moisture out of the air before it can cool the space effectively. An undersized unit will run almost continuously and still not meet your comfort goals in these conditions. If your current system is older or was sized for a smaller load, it may simply not have the capacity for what you're asking it to do in peak summer conditions.
Can a mini split replace my central AC in a Lakeway home?
In many Lakeway homes, a multi-zone mini split system can absolutely replace a central AC setup, particularly in older homes where the existing ductwork is deteriorated or inefficient. A properly designed multi-zone system can cover every conditioned area of the home while giving you independent control over each space. In newer Lakeway builds with good ductwork already in place, a hybrid approach — keeping central AC for the main areas and adding a mini split for a problem room or addition — often makes more economic sense. We'll walk you through both options during your assessment.
How long do mini split systems typically last in a lakeside environment?
A well-maintained mini split from a reputable brand should last 15 to 20 years under normal conditions. In high-humidity environments like Lakeway, the outdoor unit's coil and cabinet can experience accelerated corrosion if the unit isn't cleaned regularly and the line set insulation isn't kept in good shape. Choosing a unit with a coated coil designed for coastal or humid climates can extend that lifespan considerably. Annual maintenance is the single biggest factor in whether your system reaches the upper end of its expected life or falls short.
