Garbage Disposal Repair

From strange grinding noises to a unit that simply won't respond, our plumbers diagnose and repair garbage disposal issues quickly. Older Lakeway homes often have disposals that have been in place for decades, and targeted repairs can extend their life significantly. We assess the problem, explain your options, and get your kitchen back to normal.

Garbage Disposal Replacement

When a repair no longer makes sense, we'll help you select and install the right replacement unit for your kitchen and plumbing setup. We carry and install all major brands, and we'll make sure the new unit is properly wired, sealed, and connected. Lakeway homeowners often find that upgrading to a quieter, higher-horsepower model makes a noticeable difference in daily kitchen life.

New Garbage Disposal Installation

Adding a garbage disposal to a kitchen that doesn't have one involves more than just dropping in a unit — it requires proper plumbing and electrical connections that meet code. Our licensed plumbers handle the full installation from start to finish, ensuring everything is set up safely and correctly. This is a common upgrade in older Lakeway homes that were originally built without a disposal.

Learn More

Disposal Jam Clearing

A jammed disposal is one of the most common kitchen plumbing calls we get in Lakeway, especially in homes where the unit is older and the grinding components have worn down. We safely clear the jam without damaging the unit or the drain line beneath it. If the jam is a symptom of a bigger problem, we'll tell you honestly rather than just resetting it and walking out.

Disposal Drain Line Cleaning

The drain line connected to your garbage disposal can accumulate grease, food particles, and buildup over time — especially in kitchens that see heavy daily use. In Lakeway's humid environment, that buildup can also contribute to persistent odors under the sink. We clean the drain line thoroughly to restore proper flow and eliminate the source of the smell.

Leak Detection and Repair Under the Sink

Leaks around a garbage disposal — whether from the mounting flange, the drain connection, or the unit's body — can cause significant water damage to cabinetry and create mold conditions, a real concern in Lakeway's lakeside humidity. We locate the source of the leak precisely and make the right repair rather than a temporary patch. Catching and fixing a disposal leak early is far less costly than dealing with cabinet rot down the road.

Learn More

Garbage Disposal Reset and Electrical Troubleshooting

If your disposal hums but won't spin, or trips repeatedly, the issue may be electrical rather than mechanical. Our plumbers check the reset button, the wiring connections, and the switch to identify the true cause. We don't guess — we troubleshoot systematically so you're not paying to replace a unit that just needed a simple fix.

Sink and Disposal Drain Unclogging

A clogged sink drain connected to your disposal can back up the entire kitchen side of your plumbing if left unaddressed. We clear the clog fully, not just enough to get water moving temporarily, and check the drain line for any secondary issues. This is especially relevant for older Lakeway homes where cast iron or galvanized drain lines may have narrowed significantly over the decades.

Dishwasher Drain Connection Service

Your dishwasher typically drains through the garbage disposal, and a faulty connection between the two can cause backflow, odors, or standing water in the dishwasher. We inspect and service the dishwasher drain inlet on the disposal to make sure water is flowing in the right direction. It's a detail that gets overlooked, but it matters for both kitchen hygiene and appliance performance.

Emergency Garbage Disposal Service

A disposal failure in the middle of a dinner party or holiday gathering isn't something you want to leave until tomorrow. Cold is on the Right Plumbing & Air offers emergency service for Lakeway homeowners when you need someone out fast. We'll assess the situation, give you honest options, and get your kitchen functional again as quickly as possible.

Garbage Disposal Maintenance

Routine maintenance — including blade inspection, mounting check, and drain line flush — can add years to a garbage disposal's useful life. For Lakeway homeowners with older homes, staying ahead of wear is a smarter investment than waiting for a failure. We can include disposal maintenance as part of a broader plumbing checkup so nothing catches you off guard.

We Know Lakeway Homes

Lakeway has a housing stock that spans a pretty wide range — lakeside homes from the 1970s and 80s sitting alongside communities built in the last decade. That matters when it comes to plumbing. Older homes often have original drain lines, aging disposal units that have never been serviced, and cabinetry that's absorbed years of under-sink humidity. When we open up that cabinet, we're not surprised by what we find — we've seen it before in this community.

Living close to Lake Travis is one of Lakeway's best qualities, but the moisture that comes with it creates real wear on plumbing components. Corrosion around disposal flanges and drain connections is more common here than in drier parts of the Austin metro. Knowing that, we look beyond the obvious symptom and make sure the fix actually holds. Lakeway homeowners tend to stay in their homes for a long time and want a plumber they can call back — that's exactly the kind of relationship we're here to build.

We contacted Cold is on the Right today with an urgent plumbing need. Their very professional and organized crew arrived within 30 minutes and fixed our issue. We called five other plumbing companies before them and no one was able to help us. Cold is on the Right will now be the first plumbers we call.

We called due to slow drainage and apparently main line backing up into master bathroom shower and sink. There is an automated line that takes your information and apparently works very well. Plumbers Billy and Jeremy showed up promptly after we were informed they were being dispatched this morning, they stayed and worked until the problem was solved and advised on possible future repairs that would need to be done. They were professional, smart, respectful of our home, and efficient in their actions. Let us know what things would cost and were honest in their assessment of what would be needed next and how (un) likely our homeowners insurance would be able to help.  I appreciate the service and the fair treatment by these gentlemen. Thank you.

Santiago and Kyle were amazing during our total HVAC system replacement. Kind, informative, knowledgeable and careful to ensure a smooth install. They were efficient and got my AC working before my family arrived for spring break. Now enjoying the cool air with family. Great pricing and quick turn around from quote to finished job. Thank you! 10/10 would recommend them to anyone needing HVCA or plumbing work.

These guys are prompt and very polite, and explain your options well without trying to upsell. We thought we needed three things replaced, but they showed us that one of the three just needed an adjustment rather than a replacement. Wonderful service!

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to replace a garbage disposal in Lakeway?
Garbage disposal replacement in the Lakeway area typically runs between $200 and $500 installed, depending on the unit's horsepower and brand. Higher-end units with quieter motors and stronger grinding capacity will be on the upper end of that range. The age of your existing plumbing and whether the drain connections need any updating can also affect the total. We always give you an exact price before any work begins, so there are no surprises when the job is done.
My garbage disposal hums but won't spin — what's wrong?
A disposal that hums without spinning almost always has a jammed grinding plate. Something — a bone fragment, a bottle cap, a piece of hard food — has lodged between the plate and the grinding ring, tripping an internal overload protector. Most of the time this can be cleared without replacing the unit. However, if the jam keeps happening repeatedly, it may be a sign that the grinding components are worn and the unit is approaching the end of its useful life, which is common in older Lakeway homes that haven't had their disposal serviced in years.
Why does my kitchen sink drain slowly even when the disposal is running?
Slow draining alongside a running disposal usually points to a buildup issue in the drain line rather than the disposal itself. Grease, food particles, and soap residue accumulate inside the drain pipe over time, restricting flow. In older Lakeway homes with galvanized or cast iron drain lines, that narrowing can be significant. Running the disposal longer or using hot water won't clear it — a proper drain cleaning is what's needed to restore full flow.
Is the humidity near Lake Travis hard on garbage disposals?
Yes, and it's something we see regularly in Lakeway. The moisture environment under the sink in a lakeside home accelerates corrosion on the disposal's metal components, particularly around the flange where the disposal connects to the sink drain and at the drain outlet. Rust and corrosion in those areas can lead to slow leaks that damage cabinetry before you even notice them. We always check those connection points when we're under the sink, because catching early corrosion saves homeowners from a much bigger repair later.
Should I repair or replace my garbage disposal?
The general rule is that if a disposal is under seven years old and the issue is isolated — a jam, a minor leak at the connection, a reset problem — repair usually makes sense. If the unit is older than ten years, makes constant noise even when running correctly, or has had multiple issues in a short period, replacement is typically the better investment. For the older homes in Lakeway that still have original disposal units from the 1990s or early 2000s, replacement almost always wins on cost-effectiveness over the next few years.
What should I never put down my garbage disposal?
The most common culprits that cause disposal jams and drain clogs are grease and cooking oil, fibrous vegetables like celery and artichoke leaves, starchy foods like potato peels and pasta, eggshells, and anything hard like fruit pits or bones. Coffee grounds are often thought to be fine, but they accumulate in drain lines and contribute to slow draining over time. A good habit for Lakeway homeowners, especially those with older drain lines, is to run cold water for about 30 seconds after the disposal finishes to flush food particles fully through the line.
