About Our Water Filters & Filtration in Steiner Ranch

Steiner Ranch homes are generally newer construction, built between 2000 and 2015, with high-end finishes, multi-bath layouts, and premium appliances that are sensitive to water quality issues. Hard water and chloramines are a real problem in this part of the Austin area — they leave scale buildup on fixtures, cloud glass shower doors, shorten the lifespan of water heaters, and affect the taste of your drinking water. A properly installed filtration system addresses these issues at the source before water ever reaches your faucets, appliances, or ice maker.

Cold is on the Right has worked in Steiner Ranch for years, and we understand what homeowners here expect. You want a system that's professionally installed, out of the way, and simply works. We offer whole-home filtration, under-sink drinking water systems, and sediment pre-filters, and we take the time to match the right solution to your home's water usage, plumbing layout, and budget. No generic packages — just honest recommendations from technicians who know this area.

Water Filtration Services We Provide in Steiner Ranch

Whole-Home Water Filtration Systems

A whole-home system installs at your main water line so every tap, shower, appliance, and toilet in your Steiner Ranch home gets filtered water. This is especially valuable in larger homes with multiple bathrooms and high-end fixtures where hard water and sediment can cause real damage over time. We size and install systems designed for the flow rates and water demands of homes in this community.

Under-Sink Drinking Water Filters

Under-sink filters deliver clean, great-tasting drinking water directly from a dedicated faucet at your kitchen sink. For Steiner Ranch homeowners who want purified water without the cost of a whole-home system, this is a practical and affordable option. We install reverse osmosis and multi-stage carbon filter systems that fit neatly inside your cabinet.

Reverse Osmosis Systems

Reverse osmosis is the gold standard for drinking water filtration, removing dissolved solids, chloramines, nitrates, and other contaminants that standard filters miss. Many Steiner Ranch homeowners choose RO systems for their kitchen and are surprised at the difference in taste compared to tap water. We install both under-sink and whole-home RO configurations depending on your needs.

Sediment Pre-Filters

Sediment pre-filters are installed upstream of your main filtration system or water heater to capture sand, rust, and particulate matter before it reaches your plumbing fixtures and appliances. In homes near Lake Travis and the Hill Country terrain, sediment intrusion can be more of an issue than homeowners expect. A pre-filter extends the life of your downstream equipment and keeps water clarity high.

Carbon Block Filtration

Carbon block filters are highly effective at removing chlorine, chloramines, and volatile organic compounds that affect the taste and smell of your water. Steiner Ranch is served by a municipal supply that relies on chloramines as a disinfectant, and carbon filtration is one of the best ways to address that at the point of entry. We install whole-home and point-of-use carbon block systems that require minimal maintenance.

Water Filter Replacements and Maintenance

Filter cartridges and media need to be replaced on a regular schedule to keep your system performing properly — a clogged or expired filter can actually reduce water quality rather than improve it. We service all major brands and can set up a maintenance schedule that keeps your Steiner Ranch home's filtration system running at full capacity year-round. Whether you need a simple cartridge swap or a full media refresh, we handle it.

Water Softener and Filter Combinations

Many Steiner Ranch homeowners benefit from pairing a water softener with a filtration system — the softener handles hardness minerals while the filter addresses sediment, chloramines, and taste and odor issues. We can design a combined system that handles both in a single installation, saving space and providing comprehensive water treatment. Learn more about standalone softener options as well.

Refrigerator and Appliance Filtration

Ice makers, refrigerator water dispensers, and dishwashers are all affected by water quality — scale buildup and sediment can shorten appliance lifespans and affect performance. We install inline filters and dedicated supply line filtration to protect your kitchen appliances from hard water damage. Given the upscale appliance packages common in Steiner Ranch homes, this kind of protection makes real financial sense.

Whole-Home Water Quality Testing

Before recommending a filtration system, we offer water quality testing to identify exactly what's in your water — hardness levels, sediment, chloramine concentration, and other contaminants. This lets us recommend a solution that actually addresses your specific water issues rather than selling you something you don't need. Testing is straightforward and can usually be completed during an initial visit.

Filtration System Troubleshooting and Repairs

If your existing filtration system has lost pressure, is producing off-tasting water, or is showing signs of a leak or failure, we diagnose and repair it quickly. Many Steiner Ranch homes were built with builder-grade filtration systems that may be reaching the end of their service life. We work on all brands and can advise whether a repair or replacement is the smarter long-term call.

Water Heater Compatibility and Protection

Unfiltered hard water is one of the leading causes of premature water heater failure — sediment accumulates in the tank, reduces efficiency, and causes heating element damage. Installing a whole-home filtration or softening system is one of the best ways to extend the life of your water heater. If you're already having water heater issues related to sediment or scale, we can address both problems in a single visit.

We Know Steiner Ranch Homes

Most homes in Steiner Ranch were built in the 2000s and early 2010s, which means their plumbing systems are hitting that 15 to 20-year mark where supply lines, fixtures, and water treatment equipment start showing their age. The original builder-installed filtration and softening systems in many of these homes were entry-level products that were never meant to last indefinitely. We've seen a lot of these systems reach the end of their life in recent years, and homeowners are often surprised to learn how much better a properly specified modern system performs.

The Lake Travis proximity and Hill Country water supply in this part of northwest Austin means residents deal with consistently hard water and elevated chloramine levels — two issues that take a real toll on premium plumbing fixtures and appliances over time. We work in Steiner Ranch regularly enough to know the water conditions here, the common plumbing configurations in this neighborhood's home builders, and what filtration approach makes the most sense for homes of this size and finish level. When you call Cold is on the Right, you're getting a technician who already understands the context before they walk in the door.

We contacted Cold is on the Right today with an urgent plumbing need. Their very professional and organized crew arrived within 30 minutes and fixed our issue. We called five other plumbing companies before them and no one was able to help us. Cold is on the Right will now be the first plumbers we call.

We called due to slow drainage and apparently main line backing up into master bathroom shower and sink. There is an automated line that takes your information and apparently works very well. Plumbers Billy and Jeremy showed up promptly after we were informed they were being dispatched this morning, they stayed and worked until the problem was solved and advised on possible future repairs that would need to be done. They were professional, smart, respectful of our home, and efficient in their actions. Let us know what things would cost and were honest in their assessment of what would be needed next and how (un) likely our homeowners insurance would be able to help.  I appreciate the service and the fair treatment by these gentlemen. Thank you.

Santiago and Kyle were amazing during our total HVAC system replacement. Kind, informative, knowledgeable and careful to ensure a smooth install. They were efficient and got my AC working before my family arrived for spring break. Now enjoying the cool air with family. Great pricing and quick turn around from quote to finished job. Thank you! 10/10 would recommend them to anyone needing HVCA or plumbing work.

These guys are prompt and very polite, and explain your options well without trying to upsell. We thought we needed three things replaced, but they showed us that one of the three just needed an adjustment rather than a replacement. Wonderful service!

Frequently Asked Questions

How hard is the water in Steiner Ranch, and does it really require a filtration system?
The water in Steiner Ranch and the broader northwest Austin area is consistently hard, typically measuring between 200 and 300 parts per million of dissolved minerals. That level of hardness is considered very hard and causes real damage to plumbing fixtures, water heaters, and appliances over time. A filtration or softening system is not strictly required, but homeowners with high-end fixtures, newer appliances, or concerns about drinking water taste will notice a significant difference. Whether a whole-home system or a point-of-use filter makes more sense depends on your specific priorities and budget.
What's the difference between a water softener and a water filter — do I need both?
A water softener specifically targets hardness minerals like calcium and magnesium through an ion exchange process, while a water filter addresses sediment, chloramines, taste, odor, and other contaminants. They do different things and address different problems. Many Steiner Ranch homeowners benefit from both, often installed as a combined system, because the water here has both hardness and chloramine issues that a single type of treatment won't fully resolve. That said, if your primary concern is drinking water taste and you're not seeing significant scale buildup, an under-sink filter alone might be sufficient for your needs.
How much does a whole-home water filtration system cost to install in Steiner Ranch?
Whole-home water filtration systems in the Steiner Ranch area typically range from around $800 to $2,500 installed, depending on the type of system, the filtration media, and the complexity of the installation. Reverse osmosis systems and multi-stage carbon systems with larger capacity tanks are on the higher end of that range. Under-sink drinking water filters are generally more affordable, often in the $300 to $700 installed range. We provide upfront pricing after a water assessment so you know the full cost before any work begins.
How often do water filter cartridges need to be replaced in a home like mine?
Replacement schedules vary based on the type of system and your household water usage, but most whole-home filter cartridges need to be changed every 6 to 12 months. Sediment pre-filters may need more frequent replacement if your water has higher particulate levels, while carbon block media in whole-home systems often lasts 12 months under normal use. Under-sink reverse osmosis membranes typically last 2 to 3 years before replacement is needed, though pre-filters on RO systems are replaced more frequently. Staying on schedule matters because an overloaded or expired filter can actually allow contaminants to pass through or reduce water flow significantly.
Can you work on an existing filtration system that was installed by a previous owner or builder?
Yes, we service and repair all major brands of water filtration systems regardless of who installed them. Many Steiner Ranch homes were built with builder-grade systems that are now 15 or more years old, and we frequently help homeowners either restore those systems or upgrade to something more effective. We'll assess what you have, let you know its current condition and remaining useful life, and give you an honest recommendation on whether repair or replacement makes more financial sense for your situation.
Is there anything specific about living near Lake Travis that affects water quality in Steiner Ranch?
Steiner Ranch is served by municipal water rather than private lake water, so you're not drawing directly from Lake Travis, but the regional water supply in this part of Austin does have characteristics tied to the Hill Country source water. The water is consistently hard, and because municipal systems in this region use chloramines rather than chlorine for disinfection, standard pitcher filters or refrigerator filters are often less effective at addressing taste and odor issues. Chloramines require specific carbon filtration media to be removed effectively, which is why an appropriately specified whole-home or under-sink system performs noticeably better than basic consumer-grade filters in this area.
