About Our Mini Splits in Leander

Leander's housing boom has brought in thousands of new homes over the last decade, and many of them are built with open floor plans, bonus rooms, garage conversions, and multi-zone layouts that don't always play nicely with a single central HVAC system. Mini splits give you the flexibility to condition specific zones independently, so your home office stays cool while the living room doesn't freeze, and your energy bill reflects actual usage rather than whole-home blasting. Cold is on the Right has helped Leander homeowners figure out the right setup from day one — whether that's a single-zone wall unit or a multi-zone system covering every level of a two-story new build.

A lot of first-time homeowners in Leander are encountering mini splits for the first time and aren't sure what they've got or how to use it properly. We get that. Our technicians take the time to walk you through how your system works, what settings to use seasonally, and how to keep it running efficiently through Austin's long, brutal summers. Whether you're looking at a new installation or your current mini split is underperforming, we're the local team you can count on for straight answers and quality work.

We handle full mini split installations for new construction and existing Leander homes, including single-zone and multi-zone configurations. Multi-Zone Mini Split Systems

Multi-zone systems let a single outdoor condenser serve several indoor air handlers, which is ideal for Leander's larger new-build floor plans where comfort needs vary by room. We design and install multi-zone setups that balance efficiency with coverage, so no part of your home gets left out. This is a popular option for two-story homes, open-concept builds, and houses with finished bonus spaces over the garage.

Mini Split Repair

If your mini split is blowing warm air, making noise, leaking water, or just not responding the way it should, we diagnose and fix the problem fast. Common issues include low refrigerant, dirty coils, faulty circuit boards, and clogged drain lines — all things our technicians deal with regularly on Leander service calls. We stock common parts and don't leave you waiting days to get your system back up and running.

Mini Split Maintenance

Annual maintenance keeps your mini split running at peak efficiency and helps you avoid the kind of surprise breakdowns that hit hardest in July. Our maintenance visits include coil cleaning, filter inspection, refrigerant level checks, drain line clearing, and a full system test to catch anything developing before it becomes a costly repair. Leander summers are no joke — staying ahead of maintenance is one of the smartest things a homeowner can do.

Mini Split Replacement

Mini splits typically last 15 to 20 years when properly maintained, but units that have been neglected or undersized from the start often hit their limit sooner. If your system is struggling to keep up, cycling constantly, or running your energy bills through the roof, it may be time to replace rather than repair. We assess your current setup honestly and recommend a replacement only when it makes financial sense for you.

Learn More

Heat Pump Mini Splits

Most mini splits function as heat pumps, providing both cooling and heating from a single system — which is a major advantage in Central Texas where winters are mild but not toothless. A properly installed heat pump mini split can replace your need for a separate heating system entirely, cutting down on equipment costs and energy use. We install and service heat pump mini splits and can help you understand whether this setup makes sense for your Leander home.

Ductless Mini Split Conversions

Some Leander homes — especially those with room additions, sunrooms, or detached structures — don't have existing ductwork in certain areas. A ductless mini split is the cleanest solution, requiring only a small hole in the wall for the refrigerant line rather than a full duct run. We handle these conversions from assessment through installation so you get reliable comfort in spaces that were previously unconditioned.

Mini Split Refrigerant Services

Low refrigerant is one of the most common reasons a mini split stops cooling effectively, and it's not something that fixes itself. We check refrigerant levels, locate and repair leaks, and recharge the system to factory specs so your unit performs the way it's supposed to. All refrigerant work is performed by EPA-certified technicians following current environmental guidelines.

Mini Split Electrical and Wiring Services

Mini splits require dedicated electrical circuits, and improper wiring is a frequent issue in DIY installations or hastily permitted new construction. We inspect and correct wiring problems that can cause nuisance tripping, inconsistent operation, or outright safety hazards. Getting the electrical side right is just as important as the mechanical side, and we don't cut corners on either.

Indoor Air Handler Installation and Service

The indoor air handler is the part you actually live with — it delivers conditioned air into your space and needs to be properly positioned and installed for effective, quiet performance. We mount and configure air handlers for optimal airflow coverage and minimal noise, two things that matter a lot in busy family homes. If your current air handler is making noise, leaking, or underperforming, we can service or replace it without touching the outdoor unit.

Garage and Detached Space Mini Splits

Many Leander homeowners are converting garages into home gyms, workshops, or extra living space and need a dedicated solution for those areas. A single-zone mini split is a cost-effective way to make those spaces usable year-round without extending your main home's HVAC system. We size and install units specifically for these spaces so they're not working harder than they need to be.

We Know Leander Homes

Leander has seen some of the fastest residential growth in the entire Austin metro, and the homes here reflect it — mostly newer construction from the mid-2000s to present, with a heavy mix of large two-story floor plans, open layouts, and the kind of bonus rooms and flex spaces that challenge single-system HVAC setups. A lot of these homes were built during periods of high construction demand, and that sometimes means systems that were sized quickly rather than thoughtfully. We've walked through enough Leander homes to know the patterns: undersized equipment for large square footage, air handlers tucked in inconvenient attic spaces, and new homeowners who've never dealt with mini splits before trying to figure out what's normal and what isn't.

The Hill Country heat that rolls through Leander from May through September puts real stress on any cooling system, and mini splits are only as reliable as the installation and maintenance behind them. First-time homeowners especially benefit from having a local technician who knows the community and can give honest guidance instead of upselling equipment you don't need. Cold is on the Right has been serving the greater Austin area long enough to understand what homes in fast-growing suburbs like Leander actually need, and we bring that same straightforward approach to every service call here.

We contacted Cold is on the Right today with an urgent plumbing need. Their very professional and organized crew arrived within 30 minutes and fixed our issue. We called five other plumbing companies before them and no one was able to help us. Cold is on the Right will now be the first plumbers we call.

We called due to slow drainage and apparently main line backing up into master bathroom shower and sink. There is an automated line that takes your information and apparently works very well. Plumbers Billy and Jeremy showed up promptly after we were informed they were being dispatched this morning, they stayed and worked until the problem was solved and advised on possible future repairs that would need to be done. They were professional, smart, respectful of our home, and efficient in their actions. Let us know what things would cost and were honest in their assessment of what would be needed next and how (un) likely our homeowners insurance would be able to help.  I appreciate the service and the fair treatment by these gentlemen. Thank you.

Santiago and Kyle were amazing during our total HVAC system replacement. Kind, informative, knowledgeable and careful to ensure a smooth install. They were efficient and got my AC working before my family arrived for spring break. Now enjoying the cool air with family. Great pricing and quick turn around from quote to finished job. Thank you! 10/10 would recommend them to anyone needing HVCA or plumbing work.

These guys are prompt and very polite, and explain your options well without trying to upsell. We thought we needed three things replaced, but they showed us that one of the three just needed an adjustment rather than a replacement. Wonderful service!

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to install a mini split in Leander, TX?
A single-zone mini split installation in the Leander area typically runs between $1,500 and $4,000 depending on the size of the unit, the complexity of the install, and whether any electrical upgrades are needed. Multi-zone systems that serve multiple rooms from a single outdoor condenser generally range from $3,500 to $8,000 or more depending on how many indoor units are involved. Labor costs can vary based on accessibility — attic-mounted units or installations requiring long refrigerant line runs take more time. The best way to get an accurate number for your specific home is to have a technician assess your layout in person.
Can a mini split heat my Leander home in the winter too?
Yes, and most modern mini splits are heat pumps that provide both heating and cooling from the same system. Central Texas winters are generally mild, and heat pump mini splits work very efficiently in temperatures down to the mid-20s Fahrenheit, which covers nearly every winter day Leander sees. During the rare hard freeze, some supplemental heat source may be beneficial, but for the vast majority of the heating season a mini split handles the job well on its own. This dual functionality is one of the main reasons mini splits are popular in the Austin metro — you get year-round comfort without needing a separate furnace.
I'm a new homeowner and just moved into a Leander home with mini splits. What do I need to know?
The most important things to stay on top of are filter cleaning and annual maintenance. Mini split filters should be rinsed or vacuumed clean every four to six weeks during heavy use periods — this is the single biggest thing you can do to keep the system running efficiently. Most units have a clean filter indicator, but don't wait for it to tell you. Annual professional maintenance, ideally in the spring before cooling season, catches refrigerant issues, coil buildup, and drain line clogs before they become bigger problems. If your unit is making unusual sounds, blowing warm air when it should be cooling, or showing error codes on the display panel, those are signs to call a technician rather than ignore it.
Why is my mini split leaking water inside the house?
Water leaking from the indoor air handler is almost always caused by a clogged condensate drain line. As your mini split cools the air, it pulls moisture out of it, and that moisture has to drain somewhere. If the drain line gets blocked with algae, dust, or debris, water backs up and drips from the unit instead. In Leander's humid summers, this is a fairly common service call. A technician can clear the drain line quickly and check whether there are any other contributing factors like improper unit leveling or refrigerant issues causing excessive condensation. If ignored, a drain backup can cause water damage to walls and ceilings over time, so it's worth addressing promptly.
How long does a mini split installation take?
A single-zone mini split installation typically takes between three and five hours for an experienced crew. Multi-zone systems with two to four indoor units generally take a full day, sometimes extending into a second day depending on the complexity of the layout and how accessible the installation points are. In newer Leander homes with standard construction, installs tend to go smoothly since walls and electrical panels are relatively accessible. After installation, the system needs a short startup period for refrigerant to stabilize and for the technician to confirm everything is operating correctly before they leave.
How often does a mini split need maintenance in Central Texas?
Once a year is the standard recommendation, and spring is the ideal time to schedule it in the Leander area before the long cooling season really kicks in. During a professional maintenance visit, a technician will clean the indoor coils, flush the condensate drain, check refrigerant charge, inspect electrical connections, and test overall system performance. On top of that, homeowners should be cleaning the indoor filter themselves every four to six weeks during periods of heavy use. Mini splits that get regular attention last significantly longer and run more efficiently than those that are ignored until something breaks — especially given how hard they work through a Central Texas summer.
