About Our Heat Pump Repair in Leander

Leander has grown faster than almost anywhere else in Central Texas, and with that growth comes a lot of first-time homeowners who inherited a heat pump with their new build and aren't quite sure how it works. That's completely normal — and it's exactly why Cold is on the Right focuses on clear communication. We explain what failed, why it failed, and what we're going to do about it. No jargon, no upsells you don't need.

New construction doesn't mean trouble-free. Heat pumps in newer Leander homes are often working overtime to condition large open floor plans in Texas heat, and that kind of demand can surface issues early. Whether it's a refrigerant leak, a failed reversing valve, or a capacitor that gave out mid-summer, our licensed technicians carry the parts and the know-how to get your system back online fast.

Heat Pump Repair Services We Provide in Leander

Refrigerant Leak Detection and Repair

Low refrigerant is one of the most common reasons a heat pump stops cooling or heating effectively. We locate the leak, repair it properly, and recharge the system to manufacturer specifications so your home reaches the right temperature and stays there. Skipping this fix means your compressor is working harder than it should — and compressor replacements are expensive.

Learn More

Reversing Valve Repair

The reversing valve is what allows a heat pump to switch between heating and cooling modes. When it fails, your system may get stuck blowing warm air in summer or cool air in winter. This is a repair that requires a knowledgeable technician, and our team handles it routinely for Leander homeowners who rely on their heat pump year-round.

Learn More

Capacitor and Contactor Replacement

Capacitors and contactors are small components that take a lot of stress — especially during Leander's long, hot summers when your heat pump runs almost continuously. When they fail, the system won't start or will cycle off unexpectedly. We stock these parts on our trucks so most replacements can be completed the same day we diagnose the problem.

Learn More

Thermostat Diagnostics and Repair

Sometimes what looks like a heat pump problem is actually a thermostat that's miscommunicating with the system. This is especially common in newer Leander homes where smart thermostats were installed during construction and may not be configured correctly for the specific heat pump model. We diagnose the full system to pinpoint where the issue actually lives.

Learn More

Defrost Cycle Issues

Heat pumps are designed to run a defrost cycle when frost builds up on the outdoor unit. When that cycle malfunctions, ice accumulates and the system loses efficiency rapidly. In Leander winters, where temps can drop unexpectedly, a failed defrost cycle can leave your family without heat at the worst possible time. We diagnose and repair defrost control boards and sensors quickly.

Learn More

Compressor Diagnostics

The compressor is the heart of your heat pump, and a failing one is a serious repair. We perform thorough diagnostics to determine whether a compressor can be repaired or if replacement is the smarter path forward. For newer Leander homes still under manufacturer warranty, we'll help you understand your options before recommending any major expenditure.

Learn More

Air Handler and Blower Motor Repair

If your heat pump is running but air isn't moving through your vents, the problem may be in the air handler or blower motor inside your home. Reduced airflow puts strain on the entire system and leads to uneven temperatures across your home. We inspect and repair air handlers to restore proper circulation and protect your equipment long-term.

Learn More

Electrical Component Repair

Heat pumps depend on reliable electrical connections, and loose wiring, blown fuses, or tripped breakers can bring the whole system down. Our technicians inspect all electrical components safely and thoroughly, ensuring everything is up to code and properly secured. This is especially important in newer construction where connections can occasionally be missed during the initial build.

Learn More

Ductwork Inspection and Sealing

Even a perfectly repaired heat pump won't perform well if conditioned air is leaking out through poorly sealed ducts. In Leander's newer homes, ductwork is sometimes rushed during construction and develops gaps early. We inspect and seal duct leaks to make sure every bit of heating and cooling you're paying for actually reaches your living spaces.

Learn More

Heat Pump Tune-Up and Preventive Maintenance

The best repair is the one you never need. Our maintenance visits include a full system inspection, cleaning of coils and filters, refrigerant level check, and electrical component testing. For Leander families leaning hard on their heat pump through summer and winter, a seasonal tune-up is one of the smartest investments you can make.

Learn More

Heat Pump Replacement Consultation

Sometimes a repair doesn't make financial sense — especially if your unit is older or has suffered repeated failures. We give you an honest assessment of whether repair or replacement is the right call, and if replacement is the answer, we make that process simple and affordable. No pressure, just the facts so you can make the best decision for your home and budget.

We Know Leander Homes

Most of Leander's housing stock is less than 15 years old, and a significant portion of it was built in the last five years during the area's explosive growth. These homes were designed with heat pumps as the primary HVAC system, which is great for efficiency — but it also means a lot of Leander homeowners are managing equipment they've never dealt with before. We see this every week, and we take the time to make sure you understand your system, not just the repair we're making.

New construction in Leander moves fast, and sometimes that speed creates small issues that don't show up until the system has been running for a season or two. Duct connections that weren't fully sealed, thermostat configurations that don't match the equipment, or oversized units cycling inefficiently in large open layouts — these are patterns we recognize immediately. That familiarity means we diagnose faster, explain clearly, and fix it right the first time.

We contacted Cold is on the Right today with an urgent plumbing need. Their very professional and organized crew arrived within 30 minutes and fixed our issue. We called five other plumbing companies before them and no one was able to help us. Cold is on the Right will now be the first plumbers we call.

We called due to slow drainage and apparently main line backing up into master bathroom shower and sink. There is an automated line that takes your information and apparently works very well. Plumbers Billy and Jeremy showed up promptly after we were informed they were being dispatched this morning, they stayed and worked until the problem was solved and advised on possible future repairs that would need to be done. They were professional, smart, respectful of our home, and efficient in their actions. Let us know what things would cost and were honest in their assessment of what would be needed next and how (un) likely our homeowners insurance would be able to help.  I appreciate the service and the fair treatment by these gentlemen. Thank you.

Santiago and Kyle were amazing during our total HVAC system replacement. Kind, informative, knowledgeable and careful to ensure a smooth install. They were efficient and got my AC working before my family arrived for spring break. Now enjoying the cool air with family. Great pricing and quick turn around from quote to finished job. Thank you! 10/10 would recommend them to anyone needing HVCA or plumbing work.

These guys are prompt and very polite, and explain your options well without trying to upsell. We thought we needed three things replaced, but they showed us that one of the three just needed an adjustment rather than a replacement. Wonderful service!

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does heat pump repair cost in Leander?
Heat pump repair costs in Leander typically range from around $150 for a straightforward capacitor or contactor replacement up to $800 or more for refrigerant leak repairs or control board replacements. Compressor issues can run higher depending on the unit. We always provide a written quote before starting any work so you know exactly what you're paying. Costs can vary based on the age of your system, the brand, and parts availability.
My heat pump is brand new — why is it already having problems?
New construction moves fast in Leander, and occasionally that speed means something gets missed during installation. Common early issues include improper refrigerant charge, thermostat misconfiguration, or duct connections that weren't fully sealed. These aren't rare findings in newer homes, and they're usually straightforward to correct. If your system is still under manufacturer or builder warranty, we can help you understand what's covered before recommending any paid repair.
My heat pump is running but my house isn't getting cool. What's wrong?
This is usually a sign of low refrigerant due to a leak, a failing compressor, or a dirty coil reducing heat transfer efficiency. It can also point to airflow problems like a clogged filter or leaky ductwork. In Leander's newer homes with larger open floor plans, an undersized or improperly configured system can also struggle to keep up during peak summer heat. A diagnostic visit will identify the specific cause so the right repair can be made.
How long does a heat pump repair typically take?
Most heat pump repairs can be completed in a single visit, typically between one and three hours depending on what needs to be done. We stock common parts like capacitors, contactors, and sensors on our trucks to avoid delays. More complex repairs involving compressors or refrigerant leaks may take longer if specialty parts need to be ordered, but we'll give you an honest timeline when we diagnose the problem.
Is it worth repairing my heat pump or should I replace it?
The general rule is that if the repair cost exceeds 50 percent of the cost of a new system, and your unit is more than 10 years old, replacement often makes more financial sense. For Leander homeowners with newer systems, repair is almost always the right call since you're well within the expected lifespan of the equipment. We'll give you an honest assessment either way and won't push you toward replacement unless it genuinely serves your best interest.
Why does my heat pump ice up in winter?
Some frost on the outdoor unit in cold weather is completely normal, and your heat pump's defrost cycle is designed to clear it automatically. If ice is building up and not melting, the defrost control board, defrost sensor, or reversing valve may have failed. Low refrigerant can also contribute to icing. If you're seeing heavy ice accumulation that doesn't clear after an hour or two, it's worth having a technician take a look before the issue causes compressor damage.
